What kind of internet connection do you have? GW seems to prefer static IP addresses - if you're behind a router hooked up to a broadband connection, set your PC up to use a static IP address.

Mine uses DHCP and I don't have any problems. Could well be conflicts between Firewalls if he is having connection problems. If he has more than one firewall, one on the PC and one on the Router, if neither of these is configured properly, that is when the connections occur.

However, without further info on his PC Specs and Network configurations, it's difficult to determine from what he has posted as to what the cause of the problem may be.

How long have you been playing the game, and have you done any other updates too?

Also, have you fired this issue at the GW Support team. If you have done other updates and not a problem, they may have added something into the Updates, that affects Firewalls?
This is only speculation, as there are a lot of players here who have firewalls and such who don't experience any problems.
Another thing to try, is to roll back your NVidia Graphics drivers. I know, sounds a little bit daft, but Graphics Drivers seem to have been causing a lot of problems lately.
Not sure if caused by this latest update, which i believe ANet are aware of issues as they have posted on a few of the recent threads requesting details, or were already there and this update has just kicked them off.

I been playing since last monday, the last time i remember not being able to login is when i believe the game must of downloaded the new updates, i have contacted GW Support but i only received an email reply which was not very helpful saying to forward ports which i have already done and had no effect, Can you connect to guild wars with no problems?. also i have done what you said about the Nvidia geforce drivers but it dident help the connection issue, if is a problem with the firewall not allowing access then my firewall should prompt me which it always does when something requests access.

With regards to the Driver issue, i forgot to put in there about the Driver Cleaner which people are talking about. It's available at www.guru3d.com. Not to say this will solve your problem, but you uninstall, use the cleaner then install the older drivers again.

With regards to me being able to access GW, I don't have a single problem, which I'm thankful for. Well, apart from the Suicide Hencies, but that is something almost everyone gets at the moment.

As for the Firewall, you say it normally prompts you. Maybe if you track down the settings in your firewall options and delete anything to do with ANet or GW, reboot the PC and then try and access GW again. Maybe this might work?

You haven't wasted money, it's just a slight hiccup.

Although you set the Firewall to accept all, does it give you a list of allowed applications? If so, did you remove the options for GW from this List? Then let the Firewall add these again.

If you don't have that option, maybe a full uninstall of the Firewall software is your next option. It's a pain, but it's all about elimination, and this would be my next course of action, in case GW is causing a problem with connection.

I have done a full uninstall of my firewall software, after running guild wars the same problem is occuring, the connecting box stays still but the game does not connect, so it is not a firewall issue after all.

Ok, I'm fresh out of ideas at the moment. Maybe someone else with an inkling of what may be the cause would be useful. It's getting late here, about 1am and I've been on these boards most of the day helping out, so probably got brain freeze or I'm just tired.

I'll have a think on it, and maybe by tomorrow there may be a few more posters with ideas.

Just one thought occurred to me. Your Broadband Router, have you ever rebooted or reset it, so that it picks up a new IP address and refreshes itself?
Maybe a fresh set of numbers might get the connection working for GW. I know you are on the net already, but you never can tell.

I think your problem is the last update, because i have several friends with the same problem, that could play fine before. I advised them all to send e-mails to support, and i am pretty sure that the guys from ArenaNet will solve this issue in the next update.
The most peculiar thing is that between the 7 people that have this problem (my friends) there is no solid resemblance. They are on different ISP's, some between routers, but not all of them. They all tried uninstalling the firewall software, any antivirus software, one of them even reinstalled Windows :P
Even funnyer is that 2 of them managed to finally get into the game, but after 2 minutes and respectively 25 minutes, they were disconnected and the problem started again.
So, as i said, i think it was caused by the last update of the game (the one with separate districts for each language).

I hope to see it solved soon, because i miss my friends Fortunately i have no problem yet.

Yes, I definitely think this problem lies with NCSoft. I've also had problems connecting since last patch, and have done everything listed here, including reinstalling drivers using the driver cleaner.

Be careful what you say. According to another Thread, one guy said it has nothing to do with GW but your computer is at fault because his has been running fine since E3 Beta and stuff.

Ok, the thread only relates to Machine lockups, but I'm with all the people who are having problems. There is something severely wrong with the updates going out that is somehow having an impact on users machines.

My machine runs everything fine, but for some reason my friends machine has had to have the Drivers rolled back on the Graphics Card to get GW working??

As far as other games go, does anyone here who is having network problems, have any problems with there internet access, Email, or any other online game they play?

If not, then it's definitely an issue that GW has brought on and somehow causing problems.

No problem with internet/e-mail acces and they can play WoW without troubles.
Also, the problems with ERR=5 started after the last patch from ArenaNet. They played before with no problems.

[later edit] I see that ArenaNet people actually read this forums It's a relief and i hope they read this thread also and take it into consideration.
To resume the problems: It is an Err=5 problem, that appeared right after the last update. Not related with an Err=7 or any other crashes. Simply a connection problem.
I have several friends that experienced this problem, all of them played before the last update smoothly. None of them installed any programs/drivers that could cause this problem.
They tried a variety of possible solutions, from checking router ports to formatting the HD and reinstalling Windows, changing drivers etc.
Their systems specs are various, most of them have Realtek network card and i think one of them has Surecom.
Also most of them used the form on guildwars.com to report this problem.
The last fact, which i don't think it's of importance, they are all from Romania, but they are on several ISP's. Other people on the same ISP's can play without troubles.
I myself can play, but just happened to see this discution and decided to barge in, to try and help them as i can.

I personally hope it's fixed in the next release. As i said i miss my friends :P

You said that you uninstalled your firewall and you even set it to allow all, and it still didn't run, but could you have a hidden firewall somewhere? I didn't, for instance, realize that my Norton had a firewall; I thought it was just simply anti-virus protection. It seems suspicious to me that it has been blocked since you downloaded the updates. That seems like something, somewhere, is blocking GW because the updates triggered the block. Since it was running well before, I can't imagine any other issue. Good luck. I know it's frustrating. Hang in there.

I still don't have any problems other than a bit of lag, but I think that may either be network side, or just a little lag on my machine. Not sure how, as it's quite powerful, but i need to play with my settings and see if a change occurs.

With regards to Updates and Firewalls, whenever mine does an update, my firewall prompts me to allow GW to access the firewall again before the game loads up. It gives me two options, the only trouble is I forgot to write down the details.

So, I can only advise people that are having connection problems after updates, that if there firewall isn't sufficient to handle the new updates properly, it might be locking out the new updates, as it's a change in the code for the main app, which the firewall may be picking up as an attempt to alter code maliciously.

With my experience, I have used both Nortons and Zone Alarms. I definitely prefer Zone Alarms. I've only been using it a few months, but the whole system works so much better than Nortons and isn't resource hungry like Nortons. Just a virus run on Nortons causes me to have to reboot my PC as for some reason all the resources have disappeared and I get major slow down.

All I can say is, double check all Firewall settings. If they exist on both Router and PC, then remove all ports and settings from both for access to GW, then try and connect again. Also, just remember to reboot your routers after removing and updating ports, as a failure to do this, could impact the Ports being recognised in hardware until a reboot.

I'm going to test out my Wireless Router as I haven't tried that one yet, and see what kind of impact i get on my laptop with Nortons which has virus and firewall, My wireless router which has Firewalls, and then connects through my main Router/ADSL Modem which also has a firewall, although I think thay may be on low or disabled. Must double check that.

I'll update when i can. Good luck peopls and any updates you have on what you've tried are greatly appreciated by all.

Remember though, anyone saying they have tried something but not really tried it at all, is not worth the time and effort in saying so. It doesn't help us to help you. So the more indepth work you can do at your end, the better as we are not in front of your machines.
